Quote of the day 3-17-2011

“Baseball is a lot like life. It’s a day-to-day existence, full of ups and downs. You make the most of your opportunities in baseball as you do in life.”- Ernie Harwell

Ernie Harwell was a class act. He never looked for kudos or compliments for what he did as a broadcaster or as a human being. But Ernie earned plenty of praise and admiration for the way he carried out both roles in his life. For over fifty years his voice was heard over the airwaves, describing the action on the fields of major league ballparks from coast to coast, from Chavez Ravine to the corner of Michigan and Trumbull, to the House That Ruth Built. His catchphrases and ability to tell a lot without talking too much made him a favorite of generations of baseball fans.

Ernie’s natural ability to make everyone who met him feel comfortable and like an old friend endeared him to so many people, including yours truly.

He was a deeply religious man who credited God with all that he accomplished in his life; but Ernie never “preached” to people. When it came to living his life, Ernie believed he could inspire people by his actions, not by jumping on a soapbox and forcefully sharing his beliefs.

While it was through his work as a Tigers broadcaster that I “met” Ernie Harwell it was through his kindness and good-hearted nature that made me consider him a class act.
