Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordon͂ez partnered with the Detroit Tigers Foundation and the Community Foundation of Southwest Michigan in 2008  to create the Ordon͂ez  family scholarship.  The scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior from southwest Detroit. Leslie Samano from Cesar Chavez Academy was selected to receive the award this year.  Leslie, a four year honor roll student, plans to attend the University of Michigan-Dearborn to study social work.

The Detroit Tigers hosted our 9th annual Negro Leagues Weekend Celebration July 15th-17th.  This event is one of the  longest running celebrations of African-American players and their contributions to the game of baseball. This year the Tigers honored twelve former Negro Leagues players in an on-field ceremony.

Baseball in Brazil

I would like to start this entry by congratulating Justin Verlander, Alex Avila, Jose Valverde, Jhonny Peralta, and Miguel Cabrera on their selection to the 2011 All Star Game.  It was fantastic to see the old English “D” represented with such a high quantity of participants.

It has been a great first half of the season for our Detroit Tigers. I have followed them with pleasure each and every evening and morning through the box scores and any online articles that I can get my “PAWS” on, pun intended. When I first arrived south of the equator I found it to be quite difficult not receiving constant mobile phone updates, but I have become accustomed to being slightly out of the loop. With less than three weeks left in Sao Paulo, I am already beginning to feel nostalgic about my experience here.  I am going to miss the work that I am doing here and the people I have met, and I hope that they will miss me as well. This experience has forced me to sacrifice a few things, but this summer, the sacrifice was worth the reward. I have, indeed, missed summer baseball games, 90 degree weather, and simple conveniences like the Subway Sandwich.  However, I am fully aware that these will all be waiting for me when I return to the United States.

In the coming weeks I have organized a school wiffle ball game at the famous Ibirapuera Park (consider it the equivalent to New York’s Central Park). We will be going over some of the basic rules of wiffle ball, admittedly there are not too many to cover, at the end of each class for the next few weeks and hopefully the classes will show up with their game face on. I plan to take as many pictures as I can. It promises to be a memorable day.

I am, roughly, three weeks away from the friendly confines of Comerica Park. The thought of settling down into my narrow hunter green seat with a hot dog (or two) lathered in Ketchup while the sounds of the game engulf me excites me.

Thanks for reading.
