Gary Sheffield: Always A Tiger

PR Departments, just like Boy Scouts, should always be prepared. At the end of last season, Gary Sheffield was closing in on 500 home runs. As he got closer to the milestone, we had preparations in place just in case he reached 500 during the final homestand of 2008. Eagle-eyed fans would have noticed a rolled-up banner hanging off the left-field scoreboard ready to be unfurled, and our promotions staff had a congratulatory video from the other active members of the 500HR club ready to go. The centerpiece of the celebration was a crystal trophy created as a gift for Gary from the Tigers to mark the occasion. Well, change happens quickly in baseball and Gary recently joined the 500 Home Run Club as a member of the New York Mets. Last week, Detroit Tigers Vice President, Baseball Legal Counsel presented Gary with his gift from the Tigers.

Wow!

What an Opening Day! The pregame festivities were great, good weather and a 15-2 win! The photo gallery of the day is already online here. Now we focus on the rest of the weekend. Tomorrow is the Easter/Spring celebration. If you have children, arrive early--

The first 200 kids (14 & under) to visit the Big Cat Court photo booth will receive a free photo with the Easter Bunny.

The first 500 kids (14 & under) to enter Comerica Park will be invited to participate in a special Easter Parade along the warning track and will receive an "Always A Tiger" t-shirt.

100 children will win a special prize if their PAWS Youth Magnet schedule has an Easter Egg sticker.

Opening Day

We haven't updated the blog in a while because we're all planning for the big day on Friday. The bunting is in place, the seats have been cleaned, the concession stands are in place, and the new outfield wall signs are in place. The last of the snow was cleared off the field, exposing the red, white and blue Opening Day logo which was placed last week. The fountain in centerfield has a new look with General Motors, Ford and Chrsyler logos prominently displayed, and a message from the Club: The Detroit Tigers Support Our Autoworkers.

Today we had the first "Homestand Meeting" of the year. This is where representatives of every department of the Tigers front office, SportService (concessions) and Olympia Entertainment (parking) preview the upcoming homestand and discuss the activities. We will be doing a release about the Opening Day activities soon, but you will definitely want to be in your seat by 12:30. The pre-game events should not just make every Tigers fan proud, but should make everyone from this region of the country proud.

The Season Tickets

Ron Wade (Director of Marketing) has adamantly protected the secrecy of the design of the 2009 season tickets until now. With the final batch of "photo" tickets safely in the hands of lucky Tigers fans, he has given approval to reveal the design and points out a few things:

"Working on the season tickets is the favorite part of my job. With 2009 being the 25th Anniversary of the 1984 World Series Champions, we knew as early as last April that we wanted to use the 1984 Topps baseball card design for our tickets. As we worked on the new slogan, Always A Tiger, we realized the season tickets would be a beautiful extension of the campaign--a link between to the past with our current stars.
Even though we used an old design, we made some additions:
  • MLB Initiatives are called out on the appropriate game tickets--Jackie Robinson Day, Prostate Cancer Awareness, Roberto Clemente Day and the 9/11 Remembrance.
  • Detroit Tigers "Special Events" are called out-- Fiesta Tigres! and Negro Leagues Weekend

When I was a season ticketholder, the day I got my tickets was always special. I hope this year, the season ticketholders are happy and got a little thrill when they opened up their envelopes. "
